We’re back to it after an incredible week at Gamescom Cologne 2024.
It’s always great to attend Gamescom, one of the largest gaming events in the world, and see it bring together developers, publishers and gamers.
The buzz and the excitement of upcoming releases can’t be denied and as usual, the indie game developers made their mark, and we wanted to give them the spotlight they deserve.
Here’s a look at some of the indie game developers who made a big impact at this year’s Gamescom.
THE GAME BAKERS
Best known for their critically acclaimed titles like “Furi” and “Haven,” French indie studio The Game Bakers took center stage by presenting an exclusive first look at their much-anticipated latest project, “Cairn.”
Unlike their fast-paced, combat-heavy style of “Furi,” or the romantic exploration of “Haven,” “Cairn” offers a fresh take on the action-adventure genre. The game features a beautiful, hand-painted world inspired by Celtic folklore and ancient myths, where players will navigate through stunning landscapes, solve intricate puzzles, and face moral dilemmas that will challenge both their minds and their hearts.
As well as being a visual masterpiece with engaging storytelling and innovative game mechanics The Game Bakers have emphasized accessibility and inclusivity in “Cairn.” They have incorporated various difficulty settings, control customization options, and narrative assist modes to make sure that players of all abilities can enjoy the game.
MASSIVE MONSTER
This independent game development studio, known for creating games ‘bursting with creativity’ came to Gamescom armed with a huge announcement.
Known for the release of Cult of the Lamb in 2022, they let everyone know that they were expanding on their cult-building roguelike.
They promised Gamescom attendees new dungeons, additional storylines and more challenging bosses - so watch this space.
THUNDER LOTUS GAMES
The indie games developer behind the acclaimed game Spitfarer, all about life, death and everything in between showcased their Farewell Edition at Gamescom, with its booth filled with eager fans! The update promises to add more stories, characters and gameplay mechanics.
ACID NERVE
There is nothing more annoying, but super clever, than a cryptic teaser and Death’s Door developer, Acid Nerve, attended Gamescom with exactly that.
Keeping fans wanting more by remaining tight-lipped about specifics, they still revealed a moody trailer featuring a familiar art style and intricate game mechanics.
Death’s Door was a surprise hit with its incredibly crafter world and challenging combat so no doubt Avid Nerve’s next game will build on that success!
THUNDERFUL GAMES
Thunderful Games became one of the most talked-about indie experiences at Gamescom with their visually stunning platformer, Planet of Lana.
Set in a hand-painted world, the game follows a young girl and her mysterious animal companion on an emotional journey through an alien landscape. Thunderful’s presentation highlighted the game's narrative depth, environmental storytelling and puzzle-platforming elements.
JUMP OVER THE AGE
Jump Over the Age, the indie team behind RPG Citizen Sleeper, used Gamescom to announce its sequel.
The sequel will expand on the universe established in the first game and promises to build on the innovative gameplay and storytelling, offering even more choices, consequences and deeper character interactions.
These are just a small percentage of the creativity and innovation showcased by indie game developers at Gamescom Cologne.
These developers prove that indie titles continue to captivate audiences worldwide. From emotional narratives to challenging roguelikes, the indie games at Gamescom offered something for everyone and reminded us all that some of the most exciting ideas in gaming come from the most unexpected places - and the future of indie game developers certainly looks bright!
